For the Hakey family, staying busy was how they stuck together when every meal was missing one very important person.
They said a packed schedule full of marching band practices and ROTC, helped them pass the time while their husband and father, Sergeant Brian Hakey, has been deployed in Afghanistan.
Hakey said the Army notified him yesterday about his homecoming, and before he knew it, he was on a flight to Wilmington.
"It was almost like a dream," said Hakey, about how it felt to be reunited with his wife and children.
But, military families know after every reunion comes a major readjustment. After nearly a year apart, going back to the way things were before will take time.
"We're going to need to find a way to mesh back into a family," Anna Hakey said.
Her mother Tina Hakey replied saying, they've been a family all along, but they're excited to be a family again with Brian present.
Sergeant Hakey said he missed his family, friends, and favorite local pizza place while he was overseas. And, now that he's home, Hakey is happy to take on his favorite title and assignment as Dad.
