BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) -
Former Brunswick County Sheriff Ron Hewett is in the Brunswick County Jail after being accused of possessing a firearm as a felon.
According to jail records, Hewett is being held under a federal detainer. The US Attorney's Office refused to comment about the situation, saying it is an ongoing investigation.
A probable cause affidavit was filed Wednesday by Chad Nesbit with the ATF after officials executed a federal search warrant of Hewett's home in Supply.
Several firearms were seized, including but not limited to a Smith and Wesson .38 Revolver that was found in the top drawer of Hewett's bedside table. This firearm was not made in NC, therefore it must have been shipped or transported in interstate or foreign commerce.
Kay Patterson, Hewett's girlfriend, was at the residence when the warrant was executed and told officials she moved in with him in March 2014 and none of the guns were hers.
Hewett made his first appearance in federal court in Wilmington Thursday morning. If Hewett is found guilty, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and 3 years of supervised release.
