BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

Former Brunswick County Sheriff Ron Hewett is in the Brunswick County Jail after being accused of possessing a firearm as a felon.

According to jail records, Hewett is being held under a federal detainer. The US Attorney's Office refused to comment about the situation, saying it is an ongoing investigation.

A probable cause affidavit was filed Wednesday by Chad Nesbit with the ATF after officials executed a federal search warrant of Hewett's home in Supply.

Several firearms were seized, including but not limited to a Smith and Wesson .38 Revolver that was found in the top drawer of Hewett's bedside table. This firearm was not made in NC, therefore it must have been shipped or transported in interstate or foreign commerce.

Kay Patterson, Hewett's girlfriend, was at the residence when the warrant was executed and told officials she moved in with him in March 2014 and none of the guns were hers.

Hewett made his first appearance in federal court in Wilmington Thursday morning. If Hewett is found guilty, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and 3 years of supervised release.

Hewett has a lengthy criminal record starting back in June of 2007 when the US Attorney's office subpoenaed records from his office. He would later be indicted by a Federal Jury on felony embezzlement and corruption charges.

Hewett got out of federal prison in 2010, after serving time for obstruction of justice. He resigned as sheriff in 2008, after serving 14 years in office.

Our crew knocked on doors near Hewett's house, which is on Holden Beach Road in Supply. None of the neighbors or family members wanted to talk to us about what happened.
