A Wilmington woman died in a car crash on Highway 17 in Hampstead Tuesday afternoon.
Betty Jane Parkerson, 72, of Wilmington, passed away as a result of the two car crash, according to First Sergeant Will Thurston with the State Highway Patrol.
Parkerson was traveling north on HWY 17 in a 2004 GMC Envoy, en-route to the Scotts Hill Animal Hospital, when she was rear ended by another driver around 3:45 p.m.
Thurston said the collision forced Parkerson's car into a road side embankment near the animal hospital.
She was ejected through the sunroof. First responders tried to perform CPR, but Parkerson died on the scene.
Parkerson was also traveling with two dogs. One is now in custody of the animal hospital while the other ran away.
The public was asked to be on the lookout for a tan/brown colored Chihuahua named Kayla around the area of the crash. Another animal hospital found Kayla. Family members thanked the public for their help.
The driver of the other vehicle, Teresa Audino, was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. Audino has been charged with failure to reduce speed and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
