WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

The Wilmington Police Department is responding to WECT's recent report which pointed out that the department has not been following some of its own policies when it comes to transparency.

Our investigation found that for the past three years the WPD had not been posting data about internal investigations to their website, as is required by its own polices.

WPD spokeswoman Linda Rawley explained that the department was never trying to hide the information, but that this was simply a computer glitch. In fact, Rawley says that the files were actually uploaded to the site, but the links to those files were never made available.

The WPD's response to a public records request made by WECT was also in question. We requested the information about an officer that was recently suspended. On multiple occasions the WPD refused to give us the info, saying it wasn't  public.

We didn't take "no" for an answer, and after a day of what the WPD calls "being pushed" for the info, they finally agreed and confirmed that the officer had been suspended.

Monday the department said they always intended to release the information, and that this was just a combination of miscommunication by other departments and a back and forth with their lawyers about our request.

"The WPD works very hard to provide as much info to the public, we understand there are time constraints and we certainly don't' dot every I and cross every T, but our goal is to make sure the public gets the info they need," Rawley said.

The WPD has said they are in the process of working to come up with a better way to respond to records requests involving disciplinary action.
