Holiday DWI checkpoint nets 62

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Several law enforcement agencies worked together over the Independence Day holiday weekend to crackdown on unsafe driving.

The Governor's Highway Safety Checkpoint was set up near the off ramp of South College Road where it crosses Market Street. From 11 p.m. July 5 to 3 a.m. July 6 members of the Brunswick County Sheriff Office, Jacksonville Police Department, New Hanover County Sheriff's Office,  and Wilmington Police Department stopped drivers.

There were 62 total charges. They are broken down below:

  • 6 DWI related charges
  • 7 safety seat violations
  • 10 revoked license violations
  • 23 no operator license
  • 2 misdemeanor drug charges
  • 1 felony drug charges
  • 1 wanted person apprehended
  • 1 vehicle seized as a result of a chase related to the checkpoint. 
  • 11 miscellaneous charges

One handgun was also seized during the checkpoint.
