CARYVILLE (WATE) - A Sunday evening fire destroyed the Fireworks Superstore building off I-75 near Exit 141 in Campbell County.

Both North and South lanes of I-75 were shut down for a period of time, causing traffic to be backed up for several miles.

There were no injuries, but the owner says there were about five employees and eight customers inside when the fire started around 4:15 p.m.

Fireworks were going off and thick clouds of black smoke filled the air when firefighters responded.

"Upon our arrival it became an offensive attack, instead of risking anybody going inside. We had fireworks going off. We had fires set along the interstate from exploding fireworks," said Robert Stooksbury with the Caryville Fire Department.

As the fireworks went off just feet from I-75, the nearby Pilot gas station was also shut down.

"When you see something like this, you see exploding shells, you know you have to go defensive right off the bat, you have to stay back," Stooksbury said.

14 departments from Campbell, Scott and Anderson Counties responded. In all more than 65 people worked to contain the fire.

"We all help each other. Firefighters are brotherhood. When one department has a large fire like this, everybody is ready to go help. So that's what's good about having good friends," Stooksbury said.

Investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire.
