Spotsylvania community heartbroken after 7-year-old drowns in lake

A Spotsylvania family and the surrounding community are mourning the death of a little girl, who's body was found in a pond last night..

A resident living in the Wilderness 2 Subdivision says he heard a woman's screams while he and his wife were getting ready for the annual fireworks show Friday.

The search to find the 7-year-old girl who went missing just before the fireworks show was already underway. When he heard the screams, he called security.

"I told them I just heard some blood curdling screams by a woman screaming no, no and breaking down then the security guy on duty said, then that would be a very bad sign."

After two hours of searching for the missing child, dive teams recovered her body from the lake.

Captain Jeff Pearce with the Sheriff's office says the victim was playing with another young girl on a noodle flotation device in the lake. That girl started to struggle in the water.

"Her mother saw her and went and pulled her out of the water. Unbeknownst to that girl's mother a second girl our victim, had also gone in the water and had not surfaced," Captain Pearce said.

Now Fourth of July is on hold and many are saying it won't be the same. A memorial of stuffed animals and flowers is growing near the lake.

This father, whose own daughter swam in that same lake many times, is heartbroken by the tragedy.

"I can't Imagine what that would be like to lose your child," Captain Pearce said.

The identity of the young girl is being withheld while extended family members are notified.
