PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

A state of emergency has been declared for Pender County as Hurricane Arthur approaches.

Pender County officials are encouraging residents to remain indoors and be prepared for the loss of power. They are recommending a 72 hour supply of non-perishable food, water, medicine, baby supplies, and first aid supplies.

Surf City officials are also urging people to stay out of the ocean due to high rip current risks and dangerous strong surf conditions.

A pet friendly shelter is open at Burgaw Middle School. You are asked to bring the following items with you to the shelter:

  • Photo ID
  • Change(s) of clothes
  • Sleeping Bag/Blanket and a pillow (limited # of cots available)
  • Prescription and over-the-counter medicines
  • Baby Supplies
  • Important paperwork/Insurance policies in a plastic envelope/bag
  • Family/Insurance/other important contact phone numbers
  • Toiletries
  • Flashlight
  • *Eat before you arrive.*  Limited food/water supplies on hand. 

For Pets:

  • Food, Water and bowls for both
  • Proof of Current Rabies Vaccine or $5 (exact change or check) for one to be administered

Pender County Government will be closing at 3 p.m. for citizens services and non-essential personnel.
