NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

The New Hanover County school board decided Tuesday night to not take action on a plan to charge businesses, including film productions, rental fees for using school property.

Board members talked about potentially changing its "community use of school property and facilities policy" Tuesday night, but ultimately decided to make no changes.

Some board members expressed concern in May that the district was losing out on money by not charging productions.

Recently, Max Steel filmed scenes at Hoggard High School and Under the Dome filmed at New Hanover High.

At a policy committee meeting in June, board members discussed a nominal facility use fee for maintenance, while others stressed the need for all industries to be treated the same.

The original policy had a line that stated staff fees would only apply to the film industry. In June, the committee agreed to take out that line for the first reading.

At Tuesday night's meeting, some concerned citizens asked that the schools not charge the film industry, citing that many productions make donations to the school.

The School board decided to send this issue back to the policy committee for further discussion.
