New Hanover Regional Medical Center practiced a mass causality training exercise early Monday morning.
Volunteers from UNCW arrived at the hospital by ambulance or police car feigning injuries from a school shooter.
A total of 29 victims came through hospital doors to put emergency hospital staff to the test.
According to hospital representatives, the staff will be evaluated at the end of the exercise.
The goal of the exercise is to be prepared for all situations, explained hospital spokespeople, the more proactive the staff is, the less chaos during the actual event.
Management planned the exercise after seeing a similar training at UNCW. The scenario depicted a school shooter, which they explain is a very real scenario facing campuses.
Hours into the exercise, management was pleased with the quick action of the staff but the final evaluation will be completed at the end of the exercise.
