Members of the Mississippi Coast Amateur Radio Association are taking part in Amateur Radio Field Day at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Jeff Davis Campus on Saturday.
This is an annual event where amateur radio operators from all over the United States and North America make contact with each other over a 24 hour period.
The whole purpose of the field day is so amateur radio operators can get out of their comfort zones, work with emergency communications and make the public more aware of what they are doing.
"As most people know here on the Gulf Coast, normal modes of communication like Internet, telephone, text messaging and such is out after a major hurricane. What doesn't go down and what is in place is amateur radio, and that's where we really shine," said Steve Weiss, President of MCARA.
MCARA has about 70 members. The operators speak phonetically through the radio saying the stations call sign. In this case, the call sign is W5SGL or Whiskey, 5, Sierra, Gulf, Lima.
