COLLIERVILLE, TN -

(WMC) - A gunman is on the run Saturday night after shooting a Collierville woman multiple times during a robbery Friday night.

It happened in a relatively quiet part of Collierville and it's making everyone pay attention to their surroundings.

Wendy Carter almost didn't believe it was true. Friday night while she was grilling in her backyard, she heard 4 or 5 shots.

"Bam bam bam and she's screaming and yelling," said Carter, who has lived in the neighborhood since 1999. "She as just screaming and crying for help so I ran inside and told my husband to call police,"

While Carter's husband called police, Angie Cozart's husband ran next door to help the victim.

The suspect, who police say was a man wearing a hoodie, fled the scene in a car. Police told neighbors the suspect may have followed the woman to her home, then robbed and shot her in her driveway.

By Saturday evening word spread that a neighbor was shot, leaving everyone on high alert.

"It definately makes me look behind, today even during the day. Is someone behind me. How long have they been behind me," added Carter.

Residents are watching out for themselves and each other, hoping police find a suspect and give everyone a sense of security again.

"In this day and age you've just got to pay attention to all your surroundings. Make sure that they pay attention more, if not for themselves then for the sake of their neighbors," noted Carter.

Neighbors say a similar robbery happened two weeks ago, just up the street where a couple was robbed at gun point in their driveway.

No shots were fired and that suspect also got away. Police won't say whether the two robberies are connected.

As a precaution, if you ever suspect that someone is following you home, police say the best thing to do is drive your nearest police precinct.
