A teacher from Ashley High School is upset over the way the new principal has been running the school. That teacher directed us to a Teacher Conditions Survey recently completed by Ashley High teachers, and the results look concerning.
The principal at Ashley high school has changed four times in the last four years. New Hanover County school administrators explain that anytime you have that much change, you are going to have some negative feedback.
"Where we become concerned is after a principal has been there for three or four years, and we continue to see a pattern of those scores," said Human Resources director Dr. John Welmers. "But just on a one shot deal every two years, while it's something we want to check on, it's not that alarming."
Only 21 percent of the teachers surveyed at Ashley High reported feeling protected from duties that interfered with teaching students. Teachers also indicated problems with students at the school following the rules, and gave even lower scores for the administration consistently enforcing the rules. The survey indicated a general disconnect between teachers and the administration at Ashley.
Central office tells us they have high hopes in first time principal Jackson Norvell becoming an effective leader at Ashley if given some time, and they have no plans at this point to make any leadership changes.
School Board Member Tammy Covil said there were actually several county schools that received poor marks from teachers. She said she is pushing to survey staff more frequently to get more regular feedback about leadership at our schools. Currently teachers are surveyed by the state every two years.
Other New Hanover County schools receiving notably low marks from teachers include Snipes, DC Virgo, Gregory, Rachel Freeman, and Wrightsboro Elementary, as well as Myrtle Grove Middle school. These scores do not necessarily correlate to student performance. They are meant to be an indicator of teacher perception at individual schools.
