Pender County Commissioner Jimmy Tate has resigned from an education committee due to feeling lack of respect by other board members.
Tate resigned via email Monday night from the Pender County Priority One Committee. The Committee is composed of Pender County Commissioners and School Board Members and focuses on educational matters.
Tate sent this message to members of the committee:
Dr. Cobb and Mr. Watson:
Although I am an educated elected official committed to helping students excel, please accept this correspondence as my official resignation from the Pender County Priority One Committee (a Committee composed of Pender County Commissioners and School Board Members) effective immediately.
Sincerely, Jimmy T. Tate
Tate says his resignation comes after not receiving notification about several community based meetings concerning matters in his district. He also says his request for a resolution concerning Penderlea School was ignored.
"That sends a strong message to me that the Pender County Board of Education, superintendent as well as some of my own commissioners I feel do not want to work with me and as a result of that I removed myself," Tate explained.
Pender County Board of Education Chairman Karen Rouse released a statement regarding Tate's resignation from the Pender County Priority One Committee.
The Pender County Board of Education respects Commissioner Tate's decision and looks forward to working collaboratively with the Board of County Commissioners for the betterment of our schools and county.
When asked why Tate didn't resign from his county commissioner position, Tate said he was evaluating the matter.
"I will continue to evaluate my effectiveness to work with this existing board of commissioners and this existing board of education members," Tate commented. "If I find I can't work with them, then I will make that decision. Because to me it's all about the people, it's all about the citizens, and it's about who can better get the most common good of the people."
