WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Wilmington City leaders want to hear from residents in hopes to answer the question: How should the City of Wilmington grow?

According to the U.S. Census, Wilmington is projected to grow by 52 percent to a population of 166,000 by 2040.

The City of Wilmington said there's only about 13 percent of vacant, buildable land left within city limits, so where will all these new residents go?

Citizens are invited to drop by Halyburton Park Wednesday anytime between 1-8 p.m. to provide input on sample maps for long-term growth. Staff will be on hand to answer questions and will give brief presentations at 2, 4 and 6 p.m.

The maps were made from input already collected from hundreds of citizens. This is the next phase in an 18-month process to gather and use resident opinions to develop a long-term plan.
