CHADBOURN, NC (WECT) -

Chadbourn's town council suspended its manager during a meeting Thursday night, moments after directing him to discipline two other high-ranking town employees.

At the request of council, Town Manager Stevie Cox suspended Town Clerk Patricia Garrell and Public Utilities Director Michael Foss for two days without pay, according to Mayor Fax Rector. Council then suspended Cox for four days without pay. The suspensions began Friday.

Rector said the employees failed to investigate a "very old" unpaid public works invoice that included charges for materials not used on town projects. Council does not believe the issue involved any criminal activity, according to the mayor.

"It is a very nice day in Chadbourn!" Cox wrote in a text message Tuesday when asked for comment on the suspension. "When you would like to come down and talk about the good things happening [in] Chadbourn, please let me know."
