Craighead County Sheriff's Department to hire two new officers

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The Craighead County Sheriff's Department has been approved to hire two new officers but most of their time will be spent at school.

Brookland School District has been in talks with the Sheriff's Office to hire two school resources officers through their department.

Sheriff Marty Boyd addressed the Craighead County Quorum Court Monday evening.

Boyd said the contract will be similar to what they have worked out with Westside and Bay School Districts.

The school pays full salary and benefits while the county pays for their training and equipment. Boyd said the county will need to foot the bill for outfitting these new officers as well.

"Roughly about 3,800 per officer is what it costs to outfit them, geared up and I do not have that in my budget this year for two start-up positions," Boyd said.

Though he'll need the county to foot the bill for outfitting two new officers, Boyd said they plan to use existing vehicles for the new officers instead of purchasing new ones.

The issue was passed unanimously by the court.

Those new officers will start with Brookland Schools on August 1 of this year.

They'll work as School Resource Officers 9 months out of the year and work on patrol or at the sheriff's department when school is on break.
