PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

A blown tired caused an accident Monday evening that closed the west bound lanes if I-40 in Pender County.

A family was headed towards Wilmington on I-40 when the right rear tire of a red Ford Explorer blew out, according to NC Highway Patrol Trooper Wilson.

Wilson said the blown tire caused Beczabi Lopez to lose control of the SUV and crash into the cable in the median. After hitting the cable, the SUV rolled over at least two times ejecting three people, including children, from the rear rows of seating.

According to Wilson, two children, ages 4 and 11, were thrown from the vehicle and were found lying in the median.

A total of five people were taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for injuries sustained during the accident. Their conditions are unknown at this time.

A 911 call was made just before 5 p.m. alerting emergency responders of the accident near mile marker 394 on I-40 near the Anderson Road overpass according to Wilson.

The west bound lanes on the interstate were temporarily closed to allow two medical helicopters to land on the roadway.

Lopez was not charged with any moving violations, but was cited for driving without a license and a child restraint violation.
