CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -

Three Marines based at Camp Lejeune died last week while fighting in Afghanistan, officials with the Department of Defense said Monday.

The military identified the three men as Staff Sgt. David Stewart, 34, of Stafford, Virginia; Lance Cpl. Brandon Garabrant, 19, of Peterborough, New Hampshire; and Lance Cpl. Adam Wolff, 25, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

All three were killed Friday in what the military described as a "hostile incident" in Helmand province. They were all assigned to the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion (Forward) in the 2nd Marine Division.

Stewart joined the Marine Corps in June 2004 and was promoted to staff sergeant Nov. 11, 2010. He deployed to Iraq from September 2004 to March 2005, from March to October of 2006 and from September 2007 to April 2008. He also deployed to Afghanistan from October 2012 to April 2013 and most recently in April of this year.

Garabrant was a combat engineer who joined the Marine Corps in March 2013 and was promoted to lance corporal Dec. 1, 2011. He deployed to Afghanistan in March.

Wolff also was a combat engineer who joined the Marine Corps in December 2012 and was promoted to lance corporal Feb. 1, then deployed to Afghanistan in March.
