OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) -

Oak Island town leaders have decided to allow dogs to stay on the beach.

The initial discussion to disallow dogs on the sand was prompted by a resident claiming to see some dogs acting aggressively on the beach.

At their meeting Tuesday night, city leaders took no action. Instead, the town will continue to enforce laws already in place for dog leashes.

"Oak Island was listed in the 2013 edition of Dog Fancy Magazine as one of the nation's top ten most dog friendly beaches," Wallace said. "I'd hate to lose that reputation. We want people to know that if they're worried about leaving their dogs at home while they go on vacation, it's not problem--they can bring their dogs to Oak Island."
