OTTAWA, June 21, 2014 /CNW/ - The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, issued the following statement today on the occasion of National Aboriginal Day:
"Today, let's honour Aboriginal peoples and the vital role they have played and continue to play in shaping our great country.
National Aboriginal Day provides all Canadians an opportunity to reflect on the contributions of First Nations, Métis and Inuit people and on the importance of strengthening the relationship between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people that is so fundamental to our identity as a country.
Our Government has made strengthening the relationship a priority and we continue to make efforts to achieve this goal. For instance, this year we have made progress on priorities we share with First Nations to ensure they have access to the same opportunities for self-sufficiency and prosperity as every other Canadian.
We have made key investments that will have a real, positive impact on First Nations, such as skills and training, healthier, safe communities and economic development.
We will continue to build on these accomplishments in order to create growth in First Nations communities. To that end, I will be taking part in National Aboriginal Day festivities with the Madawaska Maliseet First Nation where I will also announce support for a project that will lead to concrete economic benefits for the community. Our Government is proud of the partnership it has with the Madawaska Maliseet and we are committed to continue developing strong relationships that lead to a better future for Aboriginal people across Canada.
Happy National Aboriginal Day!"
