Golden takes part in Team USA training camp

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshman All-America outfielder Casey Golden was one of 29 collegiate baseball players from across the country to open training camp with Team USA on Friday at the USA Baseball National Team Training Complex in Raleigh, N.C.

Golden, who was named Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America by Collegiate Baseball, stepped into the UNCW starting lineup in the fifth game of the season and never left it. In 55 games, including 53 starts, Golden batted .269 in a team-leading 223 at bats. He also led the Seahawks with 35 runs scored and was second with 60 hits. Golden was second with 12 doubles, third with four home runs and tied for the lead with nine stolen bases.

Golden, a native of Siler City, N.C., was voted to the Colonial Athletic Association's All-Rookie Squad. In conference play, he batted .299 with a team-leading four home runs and he tied for the lead with 14 runs scored.

After being recruited as an infielder, Golden stepped into centerfield for the Seahawks and finished the season with just one error in 142 total chances.

Former Seahawk pitcher Seth Frankoff was the last Seahawk to play with Team USA, making the squad in 2007. Frankoff is now pitching in Midland, Texas, with Oakland's Double A affiliate in the Texas League. Frankoff ranks third in the league with 14 saves.

UNCW Head Coach Mark Scalf has served two stints on Team USA's staff, first doing so in 2003 with former South Carolina head coach Ray Tanner and again in 2007 as a part of then Long Beach State skipper Mike Weathers' staff.

Just seven of the 29 players invited to the training camp have been assured a spot on the team. Those players include INF Alex Bregman (LSU), RHP Ryan Burr (Arizona State), RHP James Kaprelian (UCLA), RHP Jake Lemoine (Houston), C Chris Okey (Clemson), OF D.J. Stewart (Florida State) and INF Blake Trahan (Louisiana Lafayette).

Golden is among 22 players vying for a spot on the team. Joining Golden are OF Nick Banks (Texas A&M), OF Ryan Boldt (Nebraska), C Zack Collins (Miami), RHP Thomas Eshelman (Cal State Fullerton), RHP Justin Garza (Cal State Fullerton), INF, RHP Jimmy Herget (USF), RHP Skylar Hunter (The Citadel), LHP Tyler Jay (Illinois), RHP Trey Killian (Arkansas), RHP Brandon Koch (Dallas Baptist), OF Tate Matheny (Missouri State), INF Mark Matthias (Cal Poly), LHP A.J. Minter (Texas A&M), RHP Andrew Moore (Oregon State), INF Sheldon Neuse (Oklahoma), INF Kevin Newman (Arizona), RHP Bailey Ober (College of Charleston), OF Christin Stewart (Tennessee), RHP Dillon Tate (UC Santa Barbara), RHP Robert Tyler (Georgia) and C Taylor Ward (Fresno State).

Joining Golden in representing the CAA is reining Rookie-of-the-Year Bailey Ober from the College of Charleston.

Led by manager Dave Van Horn of Arkansas, the Collegiate National Team coaching staff will be charged with the task of putting together a 24-man roster for the summer tour that will feature Friendship Series against Chinese Taipei and Japan, as well as international trips to Honkbal Week in Haarlem, The Netherlands and a five-game series in Cuba.
