LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A group of East Texas men officially hold the world record for the largest American alligator harvested legally.

Justin Wells, of Bossier City, Louisiana, along with his three friends, Ryan Haltom, Tommy Bass and Jarrett Janus, reeled in the giant seven years ago in the Chalk Creek off the Trinity River.

"When we brought it up we were all excited because it was just a big, massive creature," Wells said.

However, it wasn't until this year that they were recognized for their river monster.

The Safari Club International officially marked the 880-pound alligator as the world's largest American alligator harvested legally.

"We took it across truck scales that day, and it took five of us and a John Deere cab tractor," Wells said.

Wells, a former, Lufkin resident, said he has been alligator hunting since the big catch, but hasn't caught anything like the one he caught seven years ago.

The 14-foot-8-inch alligator now sits mounted for all to see.
