NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

Superior Courts in New Hanover County are closed this week for conferences across the state, but that doesn't mean the New Hanover County courthouse is vacant.

Some New Hanover County Sheriff's deputies are using the down time to polish up on some of their law enforcement skills.

This week they are going through a series of training exercises that will have them prepared should an emergency happen on a normal day. Sheriff Ed McMahon said they practice everything from hostage situations to illegal entries into the building.

He explained that the training is all about public safety.

"The deputies will not know what's going to go on until it goes on, but again we have to prepare for what we're praying never happens," McMahon explained.
