A plant that seemed to lay dormant for 20 years finally started showing life, and once it started growing it didn't stop.
New Hanover County resident Mary Dykes has been nursing her Century Plant since she's lived in the area.
She said she's resided at the same residence for 20 years and her plant has never really grown a lot; however, after plenty of water and sunlight this year, the plant bloomed to tremendous proportions.
"It kept getting longer and longer and then all of a sudden it got little buds on the side," Dykes said.
She and her family are guessing that the plant is about 32 feet tall now. Dykes said it has attracted neighbors from across the area to her front yard.
She said she loves the attention and is glad the plant she's given so much love to has finally grown up.
"I am so excited, honestly. It's like one of my grans growing up because I've been with it for 20 years and just watched it grow, so it's like I got a 20-year-old baby," Dykes said.
