SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) -

Officials in Southport have issued a boil advisory for residents beginning on Wednesday, June 18.

The outages are planned to begin at 11 p.m. on Wednesday and service should be restored at or before 5 a.m. on Thursday, June 19.

City crews will be installing new valves in water mains and some residents will experience periods of lower pressure and outages during the installation.

Periods of low or no pressure in the distribution system increase the potential for back-siphonage and introduction of bacteria into the water system.

Officials advise residents when water service is restored to boil all water used for human consumption (including drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, and making ice) or use bottled water.

Vigorous boiling for one minute should kill any disease causing organisms that may be present in the water.

The advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
