WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Thousands of inmates are released from prison everyday, and many of them find themselves back behind bars because they can't transition into society. However, an organization in Wilmington is helping former prisoners get back on their feet.

LINC Incorporated has been working with New Hanover County to prevent crime.

They've applied for a grant that would give them more money and more research for helping people just coming out of jail become successful people in their communities.

"Whenever I tried to do it my way, I would always end up in trouble," Elwood Owens, a former inmate, said.

Owens says a new approach on life is just what he needed to get back out into society.

"I can't go back out there and do the same thing because if I do, if I don't change, then I'm going to get the same result," Owens said. "I decided that it's time for me to wake up and smell the coffee."

Owens spent years behind bars for breaking and entering, and now that he's out, he's trying to get his life back on track.

"I would say that if I had gone back home there was a great possibility that I would end up back in the same position," explained Owens.

He says the structured environment provided by LINC Incorporated has made all the difference.

"Everyone is expected to do certain things," Owens said. "Either you're going to get with the program or you're going to be out of the program."

He says LINC Inc. has built up his confidence and independence.

"I felt either I'm going to do right or I'm going to end up in prison for the rest of my life or I'm going to end up dead," Owens said.

It's a reality shared by those he lives with in the LINC community.

"It's nice to know that I'm around peers that really know where I come from," Owens said. "We have a bond because of the fact we've been down the same road."

It's a road he hopes will eventually lead to a successful life.
