Wilmington City Council voted unanimously to approve a big purchase of new trash compactors from Carolina Environmental Systems out of Kernersville, NC.
The newly approved ordinance allocates nearly $3 million ($2.99) for 18 new trash vehicles. According to the agenda packet, the funds were approved by City Council in the adopted FY 14-15 budget.
Malissa Talbert, a city public information officer, said the city tries to replace its vehicles every five to seven years as part of a normal replacement schedule.
Talbert said keeping the vehicles fresh is a priority to avoid public health issues.
"They're really old and they're breaking down a lot, and so we're having to take them back to the shop for repair," explained Talbert. "This will go a long way to getting our fleet back up to date again, and making the pick-up a lot faster."
