LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WECT) -

People in Columbus County are gearing up for a boat race where there's a prize for sinking.

The Whiteville Rotary Club will hold its annual North Carolina Cardboard Boat Championships Saturday at the Lake Waccamaw Sailing Club. Races begin at noon.

Awards include best construction, team spirit, shortest boat, longest boat, people's choice and the "Titanic Award" for the most spectacular sinking.

"When you spend two to three months working on a boat and you see it go down in flames, you hope you get the most spectacular sinking award because that's the best you'll come out with," said event organizer Jonathan Medford.

The club also presents an award for most original design. Medford explains boats have taken the form of whales and pirate ships. This year there is a squid in competition.
