(WMC) – Memphis Police Department called off its search for three or four teens last seen in a swollen creek near Shelby Farms Greenline.

The late night search for the boys lasted until 1:00 a.m. on Friday. Crews searched in and around Harrison Creek, which is a large concrete drainage ditch. The search began after witnesses reported seeing the teens playing in the water near the Shelby Farms Greenline, then being swept away a little before 7 p.m.

By Friday morning, police did not receive any reports of missing teenage boys. They also say one witness described seeing the boys run out of the creek on their own free will. At this time, MPD thinks the boys are safe somewhere.

But on Thursday, it was a much different scene as rescuers prepared for the worst. They searched a three-mile area with equipment looking for any sign of the teenagers. Robert Estes was part of that search crew, along with his drone, or as he calls it, an unmanned aerial vehicle.

The drone captured video using thermal imaging, showing a light any time something gives off heat. The drone took off from the parking lot near the McDonald's and TJ Maxx on Summer Avenue and flew south toward Sam Cooper Boulevard.

Estes said once he heard about the missing teens, he knew he had to help.

"When I first pulled up I went over and talked to them and told them what we could do, told them we wanted to help," Estes explained. "Wouldn't cost 'em a dime, because I know those kids have families. Those families love their kids just as much as we love our families and we need to find ‘em."

Even though the incident could have been a false alarm, police ask anyone who seems something unusual or alarming to contact them right away, because, they say, it is better to be safe than sorry.
