A Cleveland County man was arrested after police say he assaulted and castrated his mentally disabled cousin who was in his care.
Charles Newton, 50, was arrested Wednesday and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious bodily injury, kidnapping, assault by strangulation, abuse of a disabled person inflicting serious injury, and malicious castration.
Police say that on Wednesday, the Cleveland County Department of Social Services (DSS) went to a home on Dirty Ankle Road in Cesar to check on the welfare of a mentally disabled adult male.
When they arrived at the home, Newton, who investigators say is the disabled man's cousin and caregiver, allowed them to go inside.
There they found the man who they say "had severe injuries including broken bones, fractures, and bruises all over his body." Deputies said the victim could have been assaulted over several days.
DSS immediately called EMS and the man was taken to Cleveland Regional Medical Center, and later to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Newton was arrested and taken to the Cleveland County Detention Center where he was placed under a $150,000 bond.
Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman said that the case is sad, but it could have been worse.
"This is a sad situation that has occurred," Norman said, "The investigation shows at this time that the victim could have been assaulted over a number of days. Thank God someone called when they did or this could have been a homicide investigation."
