Area teams use summer break to improve

LEESBURG, GA (WALB) -

It just wouldn't be June without some baseball.

While many students use summer break to catch up on some relaxation, area baseball teams are using the break to improve.

Summer baseball is underway for several teams, including the Lee County Trojans.

Head coach Brandon Brock has his team playing several exhibition games against other area teams.

"Win or lose, it's not really important," he says. "It's about evaluating the talent."

With the regular season ending just a few weeks prior to summer break, many see summer ball as the "second season."

Brock disagrees.

"We like to approach it as the start of your next season more than just an extension of your previous season," Brock says. "It's really a time to keep planting seeds that you went through the last six or seven months."

With American Legion and travel baseball also holding player's interests during the summer, Brock says it's vital to get his players for at least a little while.

"We want us to be a priority. We understand that there's time for them to go off and play with other people, because they can pick up other things from other guys too," he says. "We just make sure they're loyal to us from January to May."
