COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

In the wake of two killings in as many months, dozens of Delco-area residents met with law enforcement leaders Monday evening to discuss crime.

Columbus County Sheriff Lewis Hatcher, District Attorney Jon David and County Commission Chair Edwin Russ were among the officials who attended the meeting at Evergreen A.M.E. Zion Church. Pastor William Ballard refused to allow reporters in the church and didn't want any coverage of the event.

Hatcher said residents expressed concern not only about violent crime, but also about suspicious activity in the area.

"Everybody in this community's close knit and everybody knows everybody," Hatcher said. "And when people start seeing cars that they don't recognize and that kind of thing, then they kind of want to know what's going on."

The sheriff said he has increased patrols in the area and encourages people to call 911 if they see something that doesn't seem right.

"A lot of times we say we're not our neighbor's keeper, but we are," Hatcher said.

David stressed community involvement is key to solving and preventing crimes.

"Our ability to be effective depends on people coming forward with information and cooperating in an investigation and later prosecution," he said, noting the meeting was a good step toward building trust with residents.

The sheriff's office is working to establish a community watch in the Delco area.
