SUNSET BEACH, NC (WECT) -
A woman died as a result of an apparent drowning Tuesday at Sunset Beach.
Patricia Marie Rene, 63, was found floating in the water around 11:30 a.m. according to Deputy Chief Joe Smith with the Sunset Beach Police Department. Her body was discovered in the surf just east of the Sunset Beach Fishing Pier and was pulled unresponsive from the water according to Smith. Rene was from the Carolina Shores area.
Brian Watts, Director of Brunswick Emergency Services, said bystanders pulled her from the water and attempted to perform CPR. Emergency responders from the Sunset Beach Fire Department, Calabash and Brunswick County EMS arrived on scene to continue life saving measures, then transported her to Novant Medical Center. Rene was pronounced dead when she arrived at the hospital.
Chief Smith said rip currents do not appear to have been a contributing factor in her death, and while it appears Rene may have drowned, medical examiners have not officially confirmed her cause of death according Smith.
