World series champ shares story of addiction with Coastal Horizons supporters

"When you have an illness, and a mindset, and you're active in addiction," Strawberry said. "When you have an illness, and a mindset, and you're active in addiction," Strawberry said.

Promoting healthier lives and safer communities is the mission of Coastal Horizons Center.

It's a mission the non-profit organization asked local leaders to contribute to Friday afternoon.

The keynote speaker at the annual fundraiser luncheon had personal experience with the struggles Coastal Horizons works to combat.

Darryl Strawberry is a 4-time world series champ known for his batting skills as a New York Met and a New York Yankee. He knows the fight against addiction all too well.

He struggled with drug and alcohol abuse throughout his life, and now he shares his story to give other people hope.

Strawberry said, "When you have an illness, and a mindset, and you're active in addiction, you'll go to any length to use. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter who you are, where you are or what you have, or what's great about you. Nothing's more greater at that time than using."

Strawberry says he tells his story to give hope to those battling addiction and let them know that they can overcome their demons.

A deadly virus is threatening the crawfish industry in Southwest Louisiana. It's called white spot syndrome virus and it was first discovered in Thailand, but somehow it made its way to ponds in South Louisiana and specialists are struggling to find the funds to research a solution.  “The catch was increasing and increasing and then it dropped 70% and that's when you saw the dead crawfish floating in the water,” said a crawfish farmer of 34 years, Ian Garbarino.
