WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Officers arrested a man after he reportedly shot a neighbor's dog with a pellet gun just before 3 p.m. Thursday.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, officers responded to the victim's call from 410 Cape Fear Blvd. When officers arrived they found the female victim and her dog.

The dog had a bloody wound on his left, front shoulder. The victim said that she was sitting in her backyard with her three dogs when she heard a shot and heard one dog let out a yelp.

The victim said that she did not know what prompted the shooting, only that she had seen her dogs at the fence barking.

Officers went to the house next door and located three suspects. One of the suspects was holding a pellet rifle. The suspect holding the rifle admitted to shooting the rifle but not to shooting the dog.

Officers identified the suspect as 64-year-old Eddie David Thompson. Thompson was arrested and charged with cruelty to animal and discharging a pellet gun in city limits.

The injured dog was transported to Pine Valley Animal Hospital and is expected to recover.
