SURF CITY, NC (WECT) -

The new Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center officially opened to the public Thursday.

The more than 13,000 square foot facility in Surf City is open for tours on Thursday at noon.

In the center you will find surgical suites, radiology rooms, a sick bay pool and the "turtle bay," which is a large room with several pools for turtles to take their final swims on their last leg of recovery before going back into the ocean as a healed turtle.

Jean Beasley opened the old hospital in a 900-square-foot building on Topsail Island in 1997.

Tours are from noon until 4 p.m. daily except Wednesdays and Sundays. Admission fees: $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and active-duty military and $3 for children.
