Wilmington Downtown Inc. wants the city to fork over $30,000 towards creating a municipal services district in downtown Wilmington.
Merchants and property owners who decided to be apart of this municipal services district would receive services like increased security, beautification and more transportation. However, property owners would have to pay more taxes to be in the district.
Wilmington Downtown Inc. said they need additional funds this year for more staff, surveying work and consultants to figure out how to create a municipal services district in Downtown Wilmington.
President and CEO of Wilmington Downtown Inc., Ed Wolverton said "We see this as an opportunity to enhance the growth of downtown even more, and as downtown grows and creates more jobs and more opportunities for people, the entire community benefits from that."
Council is expected to take a final vote on the city's budget which includes this request at their meeting on June 17.
