NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

The New Hanover county school board policy committee discussed Tuesday afternoon changing their community use of school property and facilities.

An earlier discussion on film companies using school facilities and only having to pay staff fees sparked the idea.

Board member Tammy Covil suggested a nominal facility use fee for maintenance. Covil noted that increased usage of facilities causes increased maintenance, which ultimately takes more money out of the tax payer's pocket.

"A bond referendum is on the table, the economy has not been good for quite sometime and we have a responsibility and a duty to make sure that we're being financially responsible," Covil explained. "I think charging the film industry just like any other industry is responsible."

Board member Lisa Estep suggested that all industries should be treated the same.

The original policy had a line that stated staff fees would only apply to the film industry. The board agreed to take out that line for the first reading. Board Members will further discuss the policy in July.
