2014 Atlantic hurricane season: What you should bring if you are preparing to evacuate

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

If you are preparing to evacuate due to an approaching hurricane, here are a few things to remember.

Make sure you know the evacuation route in your area. Know where you are going to go and leave during the daylight hours, if possible. Don't forget to take a map with you just in case you may have to detour.

Pack a hurricane survival kit. The kit should include a first aid kit, canned or dried foods only, a can opener, and utensils. It should also include bottled water, prescriptions, cellphones and cell phone charges.

Also, don't forget important documents such as driver's licenses, and other identification items, insurance policies, property inventory and special medication devices.

If you are heading to a shelter, remember to take a blanket or a sleeping bag, flashlights, special dietary foods, folding chairs, and laptops.  Do not take pets (unless allowed), alcoholic beverages, or weapons to the shelter.
