BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

An investigation lead to the discovery of a large number of animals inside a home in Supply.

Officials with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office say they found 15 dogs, 4 cats, and 3 birds living in unhealthy conditions.

The owner was reportedly overwhelmed with the care those pets needed and surrendered the animals to animal shelter.

Officials say the animals seemed fine, but there were apparently signs the pets weren't getting enough food or water and facing a flea infestation.

Officials say pet owners have options if they are struggling to provide for their animals.

"Many times it's just better for their pet to turn over responsibility to the shelter so that someone else can offer them a good home," Emily Flax with the Brunswick Co. Sheriff's Office said.

"My wish is that everybody who got an animal would spay or neuter it, and we wouldn't have this problem," Animal Care Specialist Nancy Powers said.
