Middle TN family shows regular workouts can save lives

Staying motivated can be one of the hardest parts when it comes to getting in shape. But one family is proving that a workout partner can be the key to success and hitting the gym can save your life.

You could call 90-year-old Mary Kane a regular at the Wellness Center in Rutherford County.

"I work 10 or 12 different [exercise] machines," she said.

Kane is often found at the gym alongside her son, Larry Kane, and daughter-in-law, Gloria Kane.

Gloria Kane was first through the doors years ago. Tired of feeling sluggish, she started to work out before her shift as a nurse.

"I lost 35 pounds in 90 days and then continued and have lost 60 pounds since then," she said.

Then her husband followed, and it's a good thing he did. Three years after he started working out, something went wrong.

"I just thought it was another old man's aches and pains," Larry Kane said.

"He thought he had lifted too much weight, so he went home," Gloria Kane said.

"Then my chest started hurting, and I broke out in cold sweats. And that's when I called her," Larry Kane said.

"I said, 'Come to the hospital immediately,'" Gloria Kane said.

He was having a heart attack and soon learned his time at the gym saved his life.

"If he hadn't been exercising, the doctors told him, he probably would have died from the heart attack," Gloria Kane said.

So, as soon as Larry Kane had gone through rehab, he was back in the gym and upping his workouts.

Now, the family trio hits the gym six days a week.

"They're just part of me. I live with them, and I don't know what I'd do without them. I'd be lost," Mary Kane said. "Thank God he got through it all right."
