WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

While hundreds of visitors pay homage to veterans and service members on this Memorial Day, the U.S.S. Battleship North Carolina has announced a $3 million pledge from the State Employees' Credit Union.

The donation is the largest of it's kind in efforts to preserve the ship and her legacy, which will help pay for the construction of a veteran's memorial walkway around the ship. The walkway will serve as recognition to the service and sacrifice of all veterans.

As a self supporting center for education, the Battleship relies primarily on tour admissions, sales, and donations.

Captain Terry Bragg, Executive Director of the Battleship said this project will help keep the Battleship's legacy alive for generations to come.

"The Battleship North Carolina is honored and humbled by the overwhelming support," Bragg said.

SECU is a non-profit financial cooperative owned by its members.
