(RNN) - The first named storm of the Pacific hurricane season has formed more than 600 miles off the coast of southwestern Mexico.

Tropical Storm Amanda could reach hurricane strength by Memorial Day, but it is not expected to make landfall. Instead, forecasters have predicted it will drift further west.

At latest report, Amanda had wind speeds of 39 miles per hour. Winds could reach as high as 75 miles per hour as it gets further out into the Pacific Ocean.

Two days ago, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association predicted slower than average hurricane activity for the Atlantic region, which has yet to see its first named storm. June 1 is the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season.

May 25 begins National Hurricane Preparedness Week.
