WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT/AP) -
A jury in Columbus County has convicted a man from Tabor City on a charge of voluntary manslaughter in the death of a woman in 2012.
Beamon Fowler originally faced a murder charge in the death of Rebecca Ann Buffkin on Christmas Eve in 2012. Fowler told authorities he shot Buffkin after a domestic dispute at his home. She was found dead on the kitchen floor.
After a trial that started this week, the jury returned its verdict Thursday morning. Fowler was sentenced seven to nine years, five months in prison in connection to Buffkin's killing.
District Attorney Jon David reportedly offered Fowler a plea deal for second-degree murder, but he rejected it. He did recall that he was drunk the night he and Buffkin fought over a weapon and did not recall what he told investigators that night.
