WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Family and friends of Michael Clark say they are still in shock. Clark was killed Wednesday when his moped was hit by a driver who police said was under the influence.

"It's been a shock to all of us, to lose someone like Mike," Zachary Atkinson, Clark's longtime friend said.

Atkinson said that Clark was the kind of person who would do anything for anyone. "You could always count on him if you needed anything. He would give you the shirt off of his back and he never met a stranger, you know that kind of person he was very generous."

Atkinson said Clark was an avid fisherman, and loved the outdoors. He was also the owner of Madd Mikes Scooters & Cycles in Wilmington. "He just really loved people, truly he was a people person, he loved swapping stories. That was the big thing with Mike how many stories he had."

Police said around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Clark was traveling east on Oleander Drive and was in the process of making a left turn at the light into the shopping plaza. At the same time, a Mazda collided with his moped while traveling westbound. The traffic light was turning from yellow to red at the time, according to investigators.

Clark died at the scene.

Douglas Erickson, the driver of the Mazda, is charged with felony death by vehicle, DWI and speeding. Erickson has been interviewed by our station before about the work he has done with the Red Cross. He is also the owner and innkeeper of C.W. Worth House Bed and Breakfast in Wilmington. Erickson said he has no comment on the incident.

Atkinson said that the roads are dangerous for anyone on a moped, scooter or even a bicycle he said that drivers need to be more aware.

"Mopeds have a right to be on the roads and people need to be aware that if you are in a big car or an SUV you need to really pay attention to the little guy," Atkinson said.

Mikel Rubino, a spectator on scene, described the frightening moments shortly after the accident occurred.

"We saw a sheet covered on the ground with a person underneath. We were in shock and wanted to see what's going on," said Rubino. "I just feel really bad for the family and they don't even know it yet."

Rubino said the accident was a tragic reminder of how important it is to be safe on the roads, especially around mopeds and scooters.

"For some people, that's their only means of transportation and it's a shame to worry about it," said Rubino. "I've driven a moped before and I have friends who ride mopeds. It makes me really worry when you see stuff like this."
