A lot of attention is being paid these days to the claims of dangerously long and seemingly deadly waits for some of our veterans to get medical help. And because of that, the Veterans Administration is under great scrutiny right now.
But it's something many people say they've known for a long time. Locally, we've experienced similar problems according to our veterans. Last May, WECT Anchor Jon Evans told the stories of local veterans who were waiting months to get claims fulfilled. At that time we learned the average wait time for a benefits claim was a staggering 288 days. What an insult for those who gave a portion of their lives defending this country.
We have several patriotic holidays heading our way in the months ahead. We pride ourselves in honoring veterans with these annual celebrations. But I'm thinking the best way to honor our veterans right now might be to see that their basic medical needs are being met in a timely fashion.
That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
