US Marshals say a man wanted by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) and featured on America's Most Wanted for close to 40 sex crimes was arrested Tuesday in Wilmington.

Stephen Eugene Beck has been on the TBI 10 Most Wanted list since 2011 for nine counts of rape of a child, 16 counts of rape, and 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor in 2011 and three more counts of rape of a child in 2010.

Marshals caught up with Beck at the apartment where he was living on Dapple Court off New Center Drive in Wilmington. His roommate, who does not want to be identified, had no idea the man she called her best friend was a fugitive. In fact, she thought Beck's name was Jason Keith.

She's still in shock - replaying their interactions since she met Beck a year ago. Particularly his keen interest in her kid sister.

"It made me wonder...why he always wanted to talk to her and stuff, and why he thought she was so cool," she told us.

US Marshals call Beck a master manipulator who was able to elude capture for almost 4 years. His roommate said Beck had lots of sob stories to explain his strange behavior. "He tells me he has a lot of mental psychological problems, so like, there's been some scenarios where he's gotten a little physical with me, and it's always been a situation afterwards where like he was very apologizing, he didn't mean it," the roommate described.

Marshals got a tip from the TBI that Beck was in Wilmington,  US Marshals here in Wilmington got a tip from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation that Beck was in Wilmington.

"[They] gave us information that he liked to frequent nightclubs, he was a bit of a night owl, so we started checking various nightclubs, interviewing patrons, interviewing bartenders," explained Deputy Marshal Russ Fields.

They got a hit at Ibiza nightclub in downtown Wilmington, where bartenders recognized him, and were able to help investigators find him.

Marshals make a lot of arrests, but say this is one of their biggest. Beck was indicted in Tennessee in August 2010 for the crimes, but released after posting bond according to the TBI. Sources with the US Marshals tell WECT that Beck was placed under a $1 million bond, but was able to get several bonding companies to work together to get him out.

When he never showed for his trial date on July 25, 2011 he was added to the Most Wanted List.

U.S. Marshals arrested Beck in Wilmington Tuesday afternoon for possession of methamphetamine, possession on scheduled II controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and warrants for his outstanding sex crimes.

Beck is in the New Hanover County Jail under an $18,000,000 bond.
