SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) -

Southport Fire crews responded to a fire of an 18 wheeler carrying wood chips that was engulfed by flames when they arrived on scene.

Southport Fire Chief Charles Drew said a truck delivering wood chips to the Capital Power Plant in Southport was attempting to make a turn, when the driver heard a pop and saw smoke coming from the engine.

Employees from the plant attempted to put out the fire, but were unsuccessful. When Southport Fire Department crews arrived on scene, the 18 wheeler was fully involved.

Crews from Sunny Point Military Terminal Fire Department and St. James Fire Department assisted and were able to control the fire.

There were no injured reported and the woodchips eventually made it to their destination without damage.
