UNCW Press Release
BROOKLINE, Mass. – Jason Vosler's RBI single in the seventh lifted Northeastern to a 5-3 win over visiting UNCW and secured a berth in next week's Colonial Athletic Association baseball championship.
The Huskies averted a sweep with the win and improved to 25-27 overall and 8-12 in the CAA. UNCW, meanwhile, saw its five-game winning streak halted with the loss and fell to 28-25 and 10-9.
Senior Chris Carmain (7-2) earned the win out of the bullpen, tossing 3.2 innings of two hit, shutout baseball.
Ricky Holden (2-2) was tagged with the loss, also coming out of the bullpen. Holden pitched out of a jam in the sixth, but allowed a run on a hit and a walk in 0.2 innings.
Vosler and Cam Hanley both finished with two hits for the Huskies. Nick Fanneron extended a one-run NU lead in the eighth with his first home run of the season.
Casey Golden and Corey Dick each had two hits for UNCW. Dick belted his fifth homer of the season to give UNCW a 3-2 lead in the sixth.
Up next: The Seahawks will play an opponent to be determined on May 21 in the CAA tournament.
How it happened: Northeastern broke a 3-all tie in the 7th when Jason Vosler lined a single to right that scored Connor Lyons from second. Lyons opened the inning with a walk off losing pitcher Ricky Holden (2-2). A wild pitch moved him into scoring position for Vosler.
Inside the box score: Northeastern went 3-for-9 in RBI situations … Neither team was able to score a runner from third with less than 2-out (0-2 combined) … Ryan Foster did not allow a NU leadoff hitter to reach base in six innings.
Notes: The Seahawks moved to 16-9-1 against Northeastern all-time and 7-7-1 at Friedman Diamond.
